I’ve always loved stylistics. There is something about the process of focusing on how we choose the way that we write or the words that we use. I have to admit I don’t always give it the amount of thought that it deserves but when I take the time to I find it extremely fulfilling.
This semester I’m taking a stylistics course for my masters program and will be doing a number of very different writing projects. The first of these consisted of taking a crossword puzzle and writing a short story from 25 of the across words and 25 of the down words. Many of my classmates struggled but I found the project exciting. I’m happy to challenge myself and the final product may not be amazing, but its mine and it made me use my brain. That’s all I could hope for.
If you would like to read the story in it’s entirety - fair warning, it is NOT edited - you can do so here. If not, I don’t blame you, though I would urge you to challenge yourself in this way sometime. Take something totally innocuous and create with it. It doesn’t have to be writing if you don’t like that or it doesn’t inspire you. Just go out and challenge yourself in a way that you need. It is 2019 after all, let’s keep the year going in a positive direction even if the resolution energy is dying off now that February has joined us.
